The Board of Trustees for the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) will hold a special board meeting Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Alameda High School Cafeteria. At tomorrow’s Board of Trustees meeting, the Alameda Unified School District will get an update on mid-year state “trigger” budget reductions, which will total roughly $300,000 out of an $80 million to $100 million annual budget. In a ruling released today, the California Supreme Court has ruled that the State of California can legally abolish local redevelopment agencies. Earlier this year, the State introduced legislation to do just that, to preserve funding for the K-12 schools, and the California Redevelopment Association sued. Hechinger Report New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a recent speech to students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that in his ideal world, he’d get rid of half of his city’s teachers and double the salaries of those remaining. This statement, together with a weak economy and teacher layoffs, has led to renewed interest in the question of class size — and whether larger classes inevitably mean that students learn less than they otherwise would. The Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees is expected to receive an update tonight on progress the district is making on developing a so-called “magnet schools” program in Alameda. Late yesterday, Alameda Unified School District Superintendent’s Assistant Kerri Lonergan released a media statement announcing that the school district and the teachers’ union are officially at an impasse. The teachers’ union has called for all-teachers emergency meeting. Last night, the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees heard a presentation on implementation on the McKinney-Vento act, federal legislation intended to ensure that even homeless students attend public schools. November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. This morning, Kerri Lonergan, Superintendent’s Assistant at the Alameda Unified School District, released a community bulletin to the media on behalf of AUSD Superintendent Kirsten Vital regarding fiscal year carryover funds. Alameda teachers will be wearing green today, to support their bargaining team as it heads into negotiations with the Alameda Unified School District. Over the previous weeks, teachers have been publicizing an AUSD surplus of $1 million that the district plans to spend on textbooks. |
