Vote “No” on Measure A

A letter from Action Alameda News publisher David Howard…

Having tracked the issue closely since the defeat of last year’s school parcel tax, this publication took an early position against the Alameda Unified School District parcel tax ballot measure, Measure A, on the ballot today. Measure A will tax property owners at $0.32 per square foot of home or building space, with an annual tax cap of $7,999/year, which effectively provides a much lower tax rate for the largest businesses, some with billions of dollars per year in annual revenue – those with the greatest ability to pay – in Alameda.

Below are some observations and anecdotes gathered over the course of the election cycle during the past couple of months…

Yes on A Campaign Filing Complaints

[Editor note: Bolding and italics are present in the original...]

Dear Editor:

The pro Measure A folks have filed a complaint about a letter I wrote. Their complaint states:

“In the last three years, Alameda has had two parcel tax elections in which the outcome has been determined by a very small number of votes. This could be true of the upcoming election.”

They take umbrage at my words “Call and email at least 10 of your like minded friends, relatives and neighbors and remind them of their civic responsibility to Vote… Offer to drive friends, pick up absentee ballots and hand deliver them to the City Clerk.” Please note, I am not on any committee and do not know who all the members are of either committee, nor have I received any economic benefit from either side.

There’s an e-mail circulating in Alameda urging readers to “Email, write, fax and call your state senator and assembly member and tell him or her that you support the governor’s proposal to eliminate redevelopment agencies. Then email others, especially people involved in online communities, and urge them to do the same.” It’s originating from an unexpected source – a real estate developer in Capitola, California.

Don’t Just Sit Back and Do Nothing on Measure A

Dear Editor:

One way for good people to lose is to sit back and do nothing. Normally supporting schools means supporting the children and that is a great thing for everyone and our future. Not so in Alameda. We have a district with too many administrators, administrating too many sites, with too many bricks, too much mortar and not enough students. Too much money is spent on hotel rooms for administrators, campaigns and recruiting out of district students. Not enough is spent on education, not enough focus on quality for the children. Giving the district more money rewards and perpetuates this inept administration.
