Planning Board Changes Notice Procedure to Cut Costs

Financial constraints are forcing the Alameda City Planning Board to change its notification process.

At a Planning Board meeting on Monday Aug., 24 2009, planning managers Andrew Thomas and Jon Biggs presented a proposed amendment to the Municipal Code’s section 30-36.4. The purpose of amending this section is to cut the expenses of the planning staff.

Alameda Firefighters’ Association President Expresses Disapproval with The City Council

Imagine that a fire has started at a residence on Beach Road; fortunately the nearest fire station is only a ten minute ride a way, unfortunately the station is closed.

Fortunately this didn’t happen on Aug. 8, 2009. A fire started at a residence on Beach Road, but with the help of three engines and two trucks, the fire was immediately and successfully subdued.

Rich Irony in Mayor Johnson’s Comments About Protecting Local Money for Public Safety

In a recent statement issued by the City of Alameda, Mayor Beverly Johnson complains about the State’s attempt to borrow money from local governments, depriving residents and businesses of “the services that [they] expect and deserve” such as police, fire and emergency medical service. But a study of City of Alameda provided data shows that during the Mayor’s tenure in office over the past ten years, public safety staffing has faced a steady decline.

State Budget Measures Fail – City of Alameda Scrambling to Identify Cash to Lend to the State of California

At last night’s Alameda City Council meeting, Interim City Manager Anne-Marie Gallant presented alternatives to further layoffs in the event that the State’s budget measures failed at the ballot yesterday. Those measures failed, and the City expects that the State of California may be borrowing as much as $2.4 million – maybe more – from the City of California. Cash the City doesn’t really have.
