The City of Alameda released details today on the cause of last Saturday’s fire in an apartment complex on Shorepoint Court. The California Emergency Medical Services Authority has dismissed four complaints against Alameda paramedics pursuant to their involvement in the death of Raymond Zack at an Alameda beach earlier this year. By Erica Madison “He was kind, gentle and considerate, but never violent. I don’t understand why that was an issue,” Raymond Zack’s foster mother Dolores Berry told Alameda City Council on October 11, 2011. Mrs. Berry and others who knew Zack attended a special City Council meeting investigating how and why Raymond Zach died five months ago on Memorial Day at Robert Crown Beach. Berry and friends gave Alameda City council a glimpse as to who the man was. On Tuesday, September 27th, Alameda City Council will hold a special meeting to receive a presentation on labor negotiations with the City’s bargaining units. Over the past several months, the Council was criticized for granting a contract to Alameda firefighters that was negotiated even as some City Council members accepted campaign contributions from the firefighters union. Action Alameda News has acquired radio transmission recordings from the Alameda County Regional Emergency Communications Center (ACRECC) that document the request from the Alameda Fire Department for a second medic van to be dispatched to try to revive Raymond Zack on Memorial Day to provide a second AutoPulse automatic CPR device. One week after the recordings were released to Action Alameda News, they are still not available on the City of Alameda “Crown Beach Incident” website page. The Alameda Firefighters Association Political Action Committee continued making campaign contributions to local officials through the first half of this year, giving $10,500 to sitting Alameda Councilmembers. Telephone recordings from the Alameda County Fire dispatch center during the Raymond Zack incident paint a picture of confusion and equipment failures among first responders and responding agencies. Action Alameda News obtained a copy of the recordings from Alameda County on Tuesday, pursuant to a public records request. The City of Alameda posted a copy of the recordings to its website on Wednesday, the day after Action Alameda News received a copy. Prior to that, the City of Alameda had posted a copy of only radio transmission recordings, not telephone recordings. Last night, in a 4-1 vote, Alameda City Council approved a three-year contract between the City and the International Association of Firefighters Local 689. The contract begins retroactively effective January 3, 2010 and runs until June 29, 2013. Alameda City Council is set to vote tonight on a new 3-year agreement with the firefighters union, IAFF Local 689. The item is #5-N on the Alameda City Council Regular Meeting agenda. Both the City of Alameda, and the Alameda County Fire Department, are dragging their heels on responding to public records requests for documents and records related to the death of Raymond Zack on Memorial Day at Crown Beach. The Alameda County Fire dispatch center handles the dispatch of fire equipment through the county, including Alameda Fire Department trucks and other equipment. |
