AUSD Suffers Setback in Measure A Parcel Tax Lawsuit

Yesterday, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) suffered a setback in Alameda County Superior Court when Judge Frank Roesch overruled the District’s request to dismiss a lawsuit intended to invalidate a 7-year parcel tax enacted by voters on March 8th of this year under a ballot initiative called “Measure A.”

Ronald Mooney’s Keep Alameda Schools Excellent PAC Spent Over $20,000 in the First Half of This Year

Through “Keep Alameda Schools Excellent,” a political action committee originally formed in 2008 to support the passage of Measure H, a school parcel tax, Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees President Ron Mooney raised $14,300 in the first half of this year, and spent over $20,000.

Measure E Fails

With only half of Alameda’s registered voters concerned enough by the supposed plight of the schools to even vote at all, less than two thirds of those voted “Yes,” only 35 percent of registered voters, defeating the initiative. Measure E would have given this island city some of the highest school taxes in the Bay Area, if not the nation. It would have cost homeowners $659 a year, and commercial property owners as much as $9,500 per year per parcel. It would have raised $14 million a year for eight years on top of the $80 million a year going to the schools from regular property taxes.

SunCal Contribution to AUSD Board President Ronald Mooney Brings His War Chest to Over $11,000

Last week, Action Alameda News reported that SunCal made a $5,000 contribution to a political action committee organized by Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees President Ronald Mooney for Measure H over two years ago. Campaign filings by Mooney suggest that he has over $11,000 in the committee’s coffers now, and he’s not saying what it’s for.

SunCal Donations Include $5,000 to Political Action Committee “Keep Alameda Schools Excellent”

Documents recently released by the City of Alameda to provide transparency on SunCal’s expenses related to Alameda Point show a $5,000 contribution in May of 2010 to Keep Alameda Schools Excellent, the political action committee organized by Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees President Ronald Mooney to support the passage of Measure H in 2008. Mr. Mooney has confirmed the contribution.
