Does anybody know what they are doing after all this time?

  • “The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today that it will tentatively close the Webster Tube from June 17 through July 6, and the Posey Tube from June 30 to August 11, for a construction project that will remove portions of a fiber reinforced concrete overlay from the ceiling.”

I remember when I was a kid growing up in Alameda and the tube was nice and clean green and brightly lit. Now it seems they close it twice as much as they used to and it is dirty, falling apart, dimly lit (some lights not even working), and seems to be constantly under construction. It looks like crap. I have just recently moved back to Alameda. Are my tax dollars being wasted here? What gives?

Those things were built in the 20’s. I white knuckle it through them every day on my way to and from work.

Why was the tube closed this morning at 4:30 12/20/11?

When does repair of the railing in the Posey tube start and end?
I use the raised platform for walking to work.

  • This page purportedly has info, but it’s not working.

Found this on the Jack London Square website:

January 2016 – Posey Tube Renovation Project Begins

Caltrans will perform a historical renovation of the Posey Tube portal buildings and replace the pedestrian handrail inside of the tube. The work will include sandblasting and repainting the buildings, historical renovation of the sidewalks leading up to the portal, and retrofitting the inside of the building. Other work includes installing CCTVs, organizing signs and replacing cobra head lighting with the original historic lighting at the entrances of the Posey and Webster tubes.

Work will take place at the two portal buildings, in Alameda and in the Jack London district of Oakland.

In Oakland, scaffolding around the Posey Tube portal building will block parking adjacent to the building along Harrison Street and both sides of 4th. Also, the sidewalk behind the building will be blocked. A Pedestrian Detour will be provided.

Pedestrian and bicycle access through the Posey tube will be blocked from February to May. A shuttle will be provided and signage indicating how to contact the shuttle will be posted at both entrances to the Posey Tube pedestrian walkways.

    Schedule and Updates

The project is scheduled to start construction in January 2016 and to be completed in July 2016.

Stationary mounted signs and changeable message signs (CMS) will be strategically placed to provide information regarding the project’s closures and detours.

  • Last night I tried to go through the Tube around 1 a.m. not remembering that it was closed. I followed the detour signs and wound up going all the way to the Park St. Bridge and then north on 880 to my destination at the Broadway exit in Oakland. Does anyone know a quicker route than this?

  • There is no other estuary crossing between the tube and Park Street….

  • Thanks. At least I now know I did not spend an unnecessary 20 minutes of travel last night.

  • Terraces they build the houses up in here this place is good just so busy no one’s going to be able to go to out of the tube after nine or 10 o’clock in the morning and afternoon should be a booger to come home because all it wherever you live I hope you are happy with your shows Alameda but nobody planned this I know that
